1989 April Self-Portrait

1989 April Self-Portrait

I have mentioned the Amiga set up that created this self-portrait several times on this blog. It was such a lovely experience. To this day it makes me want to buy an Amiga and a Polaroid/slide film capture device. But there are not enough hours in the day.

Back to the image. This particular piece was captured via a black and white surveillance camera. The laboratory chief had jury rigged an armature with an RGB gel wheel with one quarter being completely clear to capture the black layer. Everything was manual and you worked for good imagery.

The thing I love most is how much this parallels the beginning of photography. Having to sit and shoot four separate shots that are later compiled. Not extremely contemporary are the beginnings of the contemporary.

Obviously I didn’t sit very still but the effect is so perfect. So perfectly of its time. Hinting at both the 23 Envelope and Front 242 covers I then and still idolize. Again, I just can’t let go of those ideas.

The texture is even better than the imagery. Those jacked edges to each color field. The lines of the monitor so strict and still broken. The saturation of the slide film. It’s just perfect even if it isn’t the most flattering to my face.
