2005 Fan Dance August

The story behind these Fan Dance images is a funny one. I was running a photo agency in Chelsea in 2005. One of my interns at the time, Erik Venetsky, was asking me about fun things to do in the summer. I commented that almost every summer Ernesto Repetto and I would attend some of the MoMA PS1 Summer Warm Up shows.

I have attended them since the beginning and for the most part had great times. I suggested that he take his girlfriend and check it out. He took my recommendation.

Here is how this all relates. He came to work after attending with a tiny bit of swag. A personal battery operated fan that was a promo for Target. It had red and white LEDs on the clear fan blades. He gave me one and Ernesto and I started immediately playing with the fan and camera. That is the story of how these photos came about.

While editing these photos, I really was amazed at how beautiful so many of them are. Ernie and I would fight over who took the photos and who danced.

Later that month, I actually attended Warm Up with Erik. That was a great day at Warm Up. I should probably look him up on Facebook to see if he is going to attend any of this summer’s events.
