DJ Mix

This is my first DJ Mix from 2008 and the first to utilize Ableton Live. Let me say right now that there are some programs that are nice workhorses like Photoshop. Then there are programs that inspire devotion like Ableton Live.

The mix itself is a testament to this program. Thirty seconds in and I already have three songs going at once. It’s so smooth you can’t even tell. Each bit chopped and filtered, that 8 bit melody sounding like a melody from The Grinch Who Stole Christmas. By the time the guitar strums from the Tepr song come in it is still holding together in this weird indie/8 bit haze.

This is one of my most underrated mixes. To this day it only has 111 plays and 40 downloads. No bitterness, just saying it’s one of my favorites but doesn’t seem to be favorited by others. It is what it is.

The overall inspiration was 8 bit and that crazy tectonic dancing that reminded me of my rave days. If you aren’t familiar with the tectonic dance you can see that here. Ernie and I were both obsessed with Fluokids at this time.

The high point comes at around the 31 minute mark. The original Tepr song My Friend Guo Ran sounds nothing like that. This entire mix is self-made edits of each of the songs. Tweaked and twisted, sometimes like Vanished, to the point of being unrecognizable.

The cover this time is a long shutter speed photo of the Macy’s Fourth of July fireworks. It looks like yarn made from light. The bottom is a scan of my mother’s change purse. I am taking my name off the credit for the typography.

Download or listen to the 320 kbps directly from my site here.
