This particular DJ Mix is no longer available on soundcloud. It’s good that it finds a home. I have had the idea of consolidating all my DJ Mixes to my website for quite some time. My soundcloud account is a free account and frequently I have had to pull older mixes to accommodate new ones.
Over the next couple of weeks I will be posting all of my mixes to date with a link for play or download and if still available on soundcloud an embedded link. Note that I have not included a player because the last two plugins ruined my website for several days. That was a nightmare I will spare you.
Initially I started recording mixes into an old Powerbook 5300 back in the late 1990’s. Those were mixes created on Technic turntables and then digitized using software I don’t remember. Hard stuff that took an amazing amount of time. Fast forward to this mix from November 26, 2007.
At that time I was using Traktor. It was a breath of fresh air comparatively. Still a bit buggy and a nightmare to edit and export the audio. But sharing great music was the goal so I soldiered on.
To this day I still listen to Andy Stott and Michael Mayer as well as many others in this mix. The Modern Love/Kompakt aesthetic was something so beautiful and like all great disco touched with a hint of loss and longing.
Looking at this mix now, I find it funny that I went from classic Kompakt minimal house to maximal house. An arc that the label itself is still currently following. Stott has taken the other approach with creeped out dub among other things.
This is why I post these at all. I still love them just as I loved them while making them. I want to share that.
A final note on the cover. All these covers are using photographs I took. This one being of a fridge covered in contact paper that probably hasn’t been produced in 30 years. It was hideous and I loved it. The bottom half is an equally tacky chandelier down in Lighbulb Alley in the Bowery. This format will continue for some time.
