Polaroids 2

Set two in the Polaroids Series sees an expansion on the original idea from set one. Another tale of wintery isolation. Magic and quiet isolation seem to walk hand in hand.

Mary Margaret Burch and I left Chapel Hill to visit my brother Mark Ashby and his roommates Karl and Biscuit in Greensboro, North Carolina. That night after arriving a tremendous amount of snow fell and we were trapped in Greensboro for several days.

Those few days were amazing! Lots of Risk and Magic: The Gathering. I know, it’s a lot of personal information. I always sucked at Magic, but my winning spree at Risk decimated all hope.

At some point I noticed the Fresnel lens shower current covered in stars and thought, why don’t we set up the video camera and take some Polaroids through it. A quick idea quickly assembled.

I always carried my gear with me. Even that gigantic video camera. It’s funny to think about how much trouble that was then. Now with everything so miniaturized I don’t see my productivity growing inversely.

It’s always been extremely easy for me to get people to go along with my crazy schemes. Especially a group of people overwhelmed by cabin fever. So we just all pulled it together and I began to shoot.

Amazingly almost everyone wanted to pose. No hassle. No expectations. Just this vibe of creation. Creating something with virtually nothing.

All of these images are from one night. The first one of Mary is amazing! The whole set being a lovely document of a magical weekend. Each piece conjuring up that shoegaze aesthetic that I still aspire to represent.

All we needed was a band for these pictures to complete the idea. Speaking of, I probably should wrap this up so I can get up early tomorrow and work on music and art.

    1. Thanks, Matthew. I haven’t been making anything new in the past few weeks but have been making progress on archiving the old bits. Still trudging though…
